Some highlights:
Former musical director of the NYC-based Ukrainian Village Voices, with whom I toured Ukraine in 2018; traveled to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival (Washington D.C.) in 2023 to lead a week of workshops, performances, and chance encounters with folk artists from around the world; and performed countless programs of Ukrainian polyphony on the stages of Zlatne Uste Golden Festival, Brooklyn Folk Festival, Crandall Public Library’s Folklife series, and more.
Current member of Ensemble Verba, a Philadelphia-based collective rooted in the musical traditions of Ukraine’s villages. Composed of long-term members of the NYC-based Ukrainian Village Voices, Ensemble Verba is especially interested in folklore as a living tradition and performance as a conversation between old and new, authenticity and instinct.
Current member of the Eastern European folk-fusion band, Medukha. The recipe for Medukha involves steeping the antics of a rock band in a pitcher of third culture confusion. Add Polish and Ukrainian folk melodies to taste.
“Medukha's music resolves the following contradictions without effort: grief and playfulness, historical depth and currency, professionalism and vulnerability, bedroom lo-fi and Eastern European folk. To anyone with Eastern European heritage who is alive in today's culturally ambiguous globalized world, this music is especially healing.”
